Biography
Donna Jeanne Haraway (b. 1944) is a writer, interdisciplinary scholar, and Distinguished
Professor Emerita in the History of Consciousness department at the University of
California, Santa Cruz. A prominent figure in feminist science and technology studies,
Haraway's work bridges biology, philosophy, and cultural theory, challenging the
epistemological foundations of scientific knowledge. Her scholarship has been foundational
to feminist theory, multispecies studies, and critical engagements with technoscience.
Born and raised in Denver, Colorado, Haraway was influenced both by her Catholic upbringing
and an early engagement with the sciences. She earned a B.A. in Zoology from Colorado
College in 1966, with minors in Philosophy and English, before studying in France on a
Fulbright Fellowship at the Université de Paris and Fondation Teilhard de Chardin. She
completed her Ph.D. at Yale University in 1972, where she shifted from laboratory biology to
an interdisciplinary exploration of science as a cultural and historical practice. Her
dissertation, guided by ecologist G. Evelyn Hutchinson, wove Biology together with
Philosophy and the History of Science and Medicine.
Haraway's academic career has been shaped by her commitment to political and intellectual
activism. In the early 1970s, she participated in anti-Vietnam War and civil rights
movements while living in a politically engaged commune with her then-husband, Jaye Miller,
a gay rights activist. She held teaching positions at the University of Hawai'i, Johns
Hopkins University, and, beginning in 1980, at the University of California, Santa Cruz,
where she helped shape feminist studies in science and technology.
Haraway's book publications—including
Simians, Cyborgs, and Women (1991)
which includes prominent essays such as "A Manifesto for Cyborgs" and "Situated Knowledges";
Primate Visions (1992);
When Species Meet (2008); and
Staying with the Trouble (2016) to name a few—have been influential in
challenging boundaries between nature/culture, human/animal, and machine/organism. Her work
continues to shape contemporary conversations on family and kinship, scientific ethics,
interspecies relationality, and ecological entanglements in the "Chthulucene," described by
Haraway as our ongoing, thickly fused, multispecies present.
As of 2025, Haraway lives with her partner Rusten Hogness and their companion species
between Santa Cruz and rural Sonoma County.
Scope and Contents
This collection documents Donna Haraway's life as a scholar, writer, professor, and friend,
spanning 1966 to 2024, with the bulk of materials dating from the 1980s to the 2010s.
Preserving Haraway's original organizational structure where possible, the collection
distills her intellectual evolution, professional endeavors, collaborations, and
correspondences, charting her journey from student and young researcher to recognized
professor and influential thinker. It encompasses materials on subjects ranging from science
and technology to feminism and human-animal interactions, among many others.
Materials in Haraway's paper files include handwritten personal letters, photographs,
drafts and revisions of both famous and lesser-known publications, documentation of her
teaching career in the History of Consciousness department, international speaking
engagements, and ongoing research threads. Additionally, a vast series of digital files
offer up a closer look at Haraway's intellectual, professional, and personal life since the
rise in prominence of digital file storage and electronic correspondence.

Processing Information
Processed by Annika Berry in the Center for Archival Research and Training (CART) with
assistance from Alix Norton in 2025, with initial processing conducted by Maureen Carey in
2011. Nearly all titles in this collection were derived from the original folder titles as
received from the donor. Original folders were used when they were deemed to be serviceable,
in order to retain as much materiality and context as possible. Digital files were
transferred from carriers and hard drives in 2018 and 2024. Some files were not able to be
transferred from the carriers due to technical constraints. Duplicate files, personnel
records of other parties, and other out of scope files were removed in 2025. Digital files
were not reformatted, and file names are original to the creator, with the exception of some
characters (including [ ] . $ • &) which were replaced with an underscore ( _ ) during
processing. Original disks were retained and are included in the collection. See Digital
Files series processing information note for more information.

1972-2019
Scope and Contents
This series contains Haraway's original writings, along with materials related to the
publication of her work, including copies of her articles, essays, book reviews, and
manuscripts. It includes editorial correspondence, contract negotiations, and early
drafts and edits from publications such as
Primate Visions (1989),
Modest_Witness@Second_Millennium (1997), and
The Companion
Species Manifesto
(2003), as well as essays like "The High Cost of Information
in Post-World War II Evolutionary Biology" (1981) and "The Virtual Speculum in the New
World Order" (1997). Also present is correspondence regarding translations of her works
into multiple languages, along with compiled reviews reflecting their broad critical
reception. To preserve as much of Haraway's original organization as possible, this

Haraway had originally grouped them together.
Arrangement
The series is organized loosely by chronology, publication, and subject matter to
reflect the broad trajectory of Haraway's work while maintaining links between related
publications and topics.

Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements
Access to the born digital materials of the Donna Haraway Papers is available on-site
in the UCSC Special Collections & Archives reading room. The software application
QuickView Plus is recommended for reading and viewing, and is provided for use in the
reading room. Note that some files stored may be inaccessible due to obsolete formats,
lack of required software, or file degradation.
Conditions Governing Access
Digital files are available in the UCSC Special Collections and Archives reading room.
Some files may require reformatting before they can be accessed. Technical limitations
may hinder the Library's ability to provide access to some digital files. Access to
digital files on original carriers is prohibited; users must request to view access
copies. Contact Special Collections and Archives in advance to request access to digital
files.
Scope and Contents
This series contains digital files transferred from Donna Haraway's primary desktop
computer and various digital media carriers. The files include Haraway's writings and
publication files, research files, syllabi and teaching materials, administrative
documents related to the University of California, Santa Cruz, conference and lecture
materials, personal and biographical materials, and some professional and personal
correspondence. Spanning several decades, these files offer insight into Haraway's
intellectual pursuits, creative process, and scholarly engagements, with her digital
archives–particularly files created after the 2010s—providing a more substantial record
of her recent work-in-progress than her physical papers.
The majority of digital files date from approximately 2009 through 2018, though some
materials originate as far back as the 1980s, and others were created as recently as
2024. Older digital files appear to have been migrated from earlier computer systems,
with some showing signs of corruption or other digital artifacts indicative of their
age.
Files related to Haraway's writing and research include numerous drafts and revisions
of books, essays, and talks, some with editorial comments and annotations. Amongst these
are publications such as
Staying with the Trouble (2016) and
The
Companion Species Manifesto
(2003). Also present are critical reviews,
publicity materials, prize nominations, and publication contracts. Research files span a
wide range of subjects, reflecting Haraway's interdisciplinary approach, including
studies about permaculture and folders on immigration law, feminist theory, science
fiction, Cat's Cradle string games, and Hayao Miyazaki's
Nausicaä of the Valley
of the Wind
. These research materials exist in various formats, including text
documents, image files, and PDFs of articles and book chapters collected by Haraway.
Teaching files include course syllabi, assigned readings, slideshow presentations and
notes, and administrative documents, primarily related to the History of Consciousness
program at UC Santa Cruz. Also present are letters of recommendation written for former
students and colleagues. Conference and lecture materials contain talk drafts,
transcriptions of interviews, slideshow images, presentation notes, and event-related
communication.
Some correspondence is interspersed throughout these files, consisting of downloaded
emails and notes documenting interactions with colleagues, students, and publishers.
These include discussions about book projects, invitations to lectures and conferences,
and student requests for recommendations.
Personal and biographical materials include folders related to Haraway's home, garden,
and animals—particularly her dogs—as well as photographs from family gatherings,
vacations, and social events with friends and colleagues. Other personal files include
bibliographies and CVs, hiking trail maps, and resources related to COVID-19.
File formats present in Haraway's digital files include Microsoft Word documents (.doc,
.docx), Portable Document Format files (.pdf), Microsoft PowerPoint files (.ppt, .pptx),
various image formats (.jpg, .tiff, .png), and video files (.mp4, .mov, .m4v). The
majority of files are text documents and PDFs, with a smaller portion consisting of
images and presentations. Video files occupy the most storage space in the
collection.
Organization and Arrangement
This series contains digital files originating from two main sources and are arranged
into two sub-components: files from Haraway's personal desktop computer hard drive are
located in the source_HD component and files captured from digital media carriers are in
the source_disks component. The bulk of Haraway's digital files (over 80%) originates
from her desktop computer hard drive in the source_HD component, which she organized
into folders with subject labels such as "Art," "Books," "Professional," and "Work in
Prgrss" [sic.]. The original order of this file directory has been maintained without
intervention by archives staff. Haraway named many files using shorthand or
abbreviations, often omitting vowels. Original file names were maintained with the
exception of the removal of some characters for file preservation purposes. In the
source_disks component, files are arranged by identification number (e.g.
ua0042_med_0001) assigned by archives staff upon capture of the digital files from the
original digital media carriers.
Processing Information
The digital files in this collection were processed by Annika Berry and Alix Norton in
2025. Files were transferred from two primary sources: Haraway's personal Macintosh
computer hard drive (source_HD) and digital media carriers (source_disks) donated
alongside her physical papers. The carriers include 14 3.5-inch floppy disks, 17 CDs, 8
DVDs, and one 8GB flash drive. Files from Haraway's hard drive were transferred to a
Library server in May 2024 by Alix Norton, while files from the carriers were
transferred in two stages, in 2018 by student assistants and in 2024 by Alix Norton.
Dates may have been altered due to technology used to transfer and manage files,
especially in the source_disks component.
DataAccessioner v1.2 was used to capture digital files from the carriers. Several tools
supported file analysis: TreeSize Pro helped identify and remove exact duplicates,
calculate file sizes, and locate personally identifiable information; DROID was used to
detect extension mismatches; and manual file review (via MacOS Finder or Windows File
Explorer, QuickView Plus, and Notepad) was conducted to identify out-of-scope materials
and additional personally identifiable information.
Files containing personally identifiable information—such as social security numbers,
bank account details, and account passwords—as well as confidential personnel records
and private student files were deleted in accordance with UCSC Special Collections &
Archives' privacy policy. Other files removed during processing included exact
duplicates, system and temporary files, internet files, application files, drivers, and
software installers, as well as MacOS-specific system files (e.g., thumbs.db,
.DS_Store).
Compressed container files (e.g., .zip) were extracted and their contents saved, while
the original compressed files were deleted. Empty folders were retained when files were
removed. Duplicate files with different filenames were also removed, though researchers
can request access to the duplicates log to locate retained versions.
Certain older files in unreadable formats were retained in the collection in the event
that future technological advancements enable access; approximately 3,500 transferred
files have unknown file types or extensions and may not be accessible. Four 3.5-inch
floppy disks could not be transferred due to technological constraints; these original
disks were retained in the collection along with the other digital media carriers, with
the exception of Haraway's personal computer hard drive which was not transferred to the
Library. Files were not reformatted, and file names are original to the creator, with
the exception of some characters (including [ ] . $ • &) which were replaced with an
underscore ( _ ) during processing.
Processor
Digital materials processed by Annika Berry and Alix Norton in 2025 in the Center for
Archival Research and Training (CART).
