Geraldine Knatz was born in New Jersey. She received a B.A. degree in zoology from Rutgers University in 1973, and an M.Sc.

the creation and implementation of the San Pedro Bay Ports Clean Air Action Plan, an aggressive plan that reduced air emissions
by combined port operations of over 70 percent over five years. The Clean Air Action Plan is recognized around the world for
its innovation and success. Prior to directing the Port of Los Angeles, Dr. Knatz was the managing director of the Port of
Long Beach where she also led a number of environmental initiatives, including the Green Port Policy and Truck Trip Reduction

Dr. Knatz was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2014 for international leadership in the engineering and development
of environmentally clean urban seaports. She served as a member of the NAE Section 12 Peer committee. She serves as a member

Scope and Contents
The Geraldine Knatz papers consist of material created or collected by Geraldine Knatz during or subsequent to her tenures
as Executive Director of the Port of Los Angeles (2006-2014) and Managing Director of the Port of Long Beach (1999-2006).
Included are weekly reports written by Knatz, management files, correspondence, memoranda, speeches, publications, photographs,
posters, awards, press materials, and clippings. In addition, the papers include port-related ephemera and historical materials,
minutes of the Board of Harbor Commissioner's meetings (1907-1980), and annual reports (1912-1990). Lastly, the collection
includes digital files, accessible via the USC Digital Library, of port-related goals and strategic plans, videos of Knatz's
presentations, digital photographs, and other content. Knatz served as the first female director of the Port of Los Angeles,
the largest port in North America, and she implemented several groundbreaking environmental initiatives throughout her career,
including the San Pedro Bay Ports Clean Air Action Plan and, as Managing Director of the Port of Long Beach, the Green Port
Policy and Truck Trip Reduction Program.

Processing Information
The intellectual arrangement of descriptive records in this finding aid follows Geraldine Knatz's original organization of
the material prior to its acquisition by the USC Libraries. Along with the donation of the papers themselves, Knatz also provided
multiple inventories with detailed descriptions of most of the material in the collection. The accessioning archivist re-used
Knatz's descriptions for the majority of the records in this finding aid. Many item- and folder-level descriptive records
in the finding aid include notes titled "Notes from Geraldine Knatz," which quote the inventories that Knatz provided. The
finding aid's series correspond to the separate inventories that Knatz provided--saved as separate Word documents--with her
donation. As these inventories were partly based on the collection's previous physical arrangement, there is some overlap
of similar topics and formats across the finding aid's series.
Separated Materials
Some of the published materials donated with the Geraldine Knatz papers were separated from the archival collection and cataloged
individually. The cataloged items are discoverable via the USC Libraries catalog search. The catalog records describing the
separated materials include a local note: "Donated to USC Libraries as part of the Geraldine Knatz papers."

"This photo came from a port employee's (Ralph Appy) mother's photo album (Giacalone family). It was published on page 120

Most of the women were identified by Ralph going door to door in San Pedro and taking the photo to Slav Hall. The names of
the women cannery workers were included in the caption of the photo in the second edition of the book. When the book came

Unpublished manuscript relating to the Alameda Corridor history titled "The Alameda Corridor Story: A Project of National
Significance" written by Renee Simon
Notes from Geraldine Knatz
"Simon was contracted to write this history but it did not satisfy the agency and the document in No. 3 above was produced
and published. Simon's version was never published. Simon was the first female elected to the Long Beach City Council. Simon
was a member of the Southern California Association of Governments Ports Advisory Committee in 1981 which was created to examine
the issues of rail traffic from port activities."

Building a World Gateway by Clarence Matson, with inserted memorandum
1945
Notes from Geraldine Knatz
"This book is inscribed 'To Jimmy Ingebretsen from Stanley Ofalson, July 1945.' Stanley T. Olafson worked for the Chamber
of Commerce and founded Foreign Trade Week which is not called World Trade Week. An award is given in his name every year
by the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce. Jimmy Ingebretson was the Chambers pick to fill a vacant seat on the harbor commission
in 1945 while the unions and local communities around the port supported boatbuilder John Rados. The LA Chamber was successful
in its campaign to have Ingebretsen appointed to the Harbor Commission. During this period, a 10 page memo titled "On the
Situation in the Los Angeles Harbor Department and the bearing thereon of the pending appointment of a fifth member of the
Board of Harbor Commissioners" was prepared by an unknown author and circulated. This memo describes the fight over the appointment
of a harbor commissioner circa 1945, with the Los Angeles Chamber supporting Jimmy Ingretbretsen and the local communities
and labor supporting John Rados of San Pedro. Includes mention of City Councilman George H. Moore, Emil Menveg of Wilmington,
Robert Sampson of San Pedro, Los Angeles Mayor Bowron, Harbor Commissioners Burt Heinly, Eugene Overton, and Morgan Adams,
Harbor General Manager Arthur Eldridge and allegations of scandal, graft and corruption. The memo was tucked inside this book
when I purchased it online. This is the only copy of this memo I have ever came across in my research and to preserve its
existence, a transcript was made and published as an appendix in my book
Port of Los Angeles, Conflict, Commerce and the Fight for Control. This likely was Jimmy's copy of the memo."
Processing Information
The accessioning archivist removed the inserted memorandum from the book and rehoused it into an archival folder arranged
next to the book.

The Board of Harbor Commissioners meeting minutes are also saved on CDs stored elsewhere in the Geraldine Knatz papers (see
the record titled "Board of Harbor Commissioners (BHC) of the City of Los Angeles meeting minutes, Vol. 1-519 [on CDs], 1907-1980"
under the series titled "Digital photographs, video recordings, and Board of Harbor Commissioners of the City of Los Angeles

Processing Information
The digital files described under this series were copied from Geraldine Knatz's external hard drive to the USC Digital Library
and the USC Digital Repository. Each folder- and file-level record under this series includes a publicly accessible link to
the corresponding USC Digital Library asset. The files are still saved on Geraldine Knatz's external hard drive in addition
to the copies uploaded to the USC Libraries' digital asset management systems (DAMS).
The accessioning archivist did not copy all of the files from the external hard drive. Some of the files that Knatz saved
under folders titled "G.Knatz Press"; "G.Knatz Publications"; and "G.Knatz Videos" were not copied to the USC Libraries' DAMS,
due to potential copyright infringement and the availability of the published material elsewhere.
