Established in 1862, the Virginia City and Gold Hill Water Company built a 21-mile system of flumes, reservoirs, tunnels,
and high pressure pipes to carry water from Lake Marlette in the Sierra Nevada Mountains to Virginia City beginning in 1873.
The company supplied water to power the steam-driven operations of the mines as well as to Virginia City and the Comstock
area population.
