Title:

[State of Jefferson secession movement photographs]

Abstract:

Snapshot photographs documenting activities pertaining to the beginning of the separatist movement originating in Northern California (Siskiyou, Del Norte, and Modoc counties) and Southern Oregon (Curry County) which advocated, in a semi-serious manner, the secession of those counties from their respective states and the formation of a new State of Jefferson. All documented activities -- marching, speeches, barricading of roads, etc. -- took place on December 4, 1941 in and around Yreka, Calif. Some images depict John L. Childs, the proposed Governor of the new state. Also includes two clippings from the Siskiyou Daily News issued in January of 1942, pertaining to the Siskiyou Camera Club.
