Sam Hamburg was one of California's leading agricultural innovators and later an agricultural advisor to the state of Israel.
Sam Hamburg was born in Pinsk, Poland in 1898. At the age of thirteen, he moved from Pinsk to Palestine to attend high school
where he learned about farming. He came to California in 1920 and studied in the agriculture programs at UC Berkeley and Davis.
While in school he also worked on ranches in the Central Valley. After graduating, he set out to acquire the land that would
become Sam Hamburg Farms in the Los Banos area. He developed a new system to lift water from the river and canals to his properties
and was one of the farmers that helped introduce the cotton picking machine to the Central Valley. After his success in farming
in the Central Valley, he went back to Israel and helped establish cotton farming in the country. He became a well-known and
beloved figure in Israel and held close relationships with prominent Israeli figures like David Ben-Gurion and Golda Meir.
In 1968, Hamburg was diagnosed with Guillian-Barre syndrome and eventually sold off Sam Hamburg Farms in 1972. He passed away
in 1976.
