San Francisco's Chevra Kadisha was founded in 1901 by San Francisco's Eastern European Jews to provide burials in accordance with Jewish law. In 1919, a founder, Abraham Sugarman, proposed that indigent Jews be buried free of charge. This motion was unanimously adopted. The organization changed its name to Sinai Memorial Chapel in 1937. It has since become a non-profit organization that contributes its earnings to charitable and educational institutions.
