Susan M. Ervin-Tripp was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1927. She attained a Bachelor's degree in art history from Vassar College in 1949 and a Ph.D. in social psychology from the University of Michigan in 1955. In 1958 she drove across the country to take a visiting assistant professorship in the Department of Psychology at the University of California, Berkeley where one year later she became professor in the Department of Speech (now the Department of Rhetoric), later returning to the department of Psychology in 1975. She conducted research in the areas of bilingualism and language development in children, Native Americans, and immigrants. She was also an early advocate for gender equality in academia. Ervin-Tripp retired from Berkeley in 1999 and passed away in Oakland, California in 2018.
