Abstract:

Five letters from composer Ernest Bloch to Rabbi Solomon Goldman that express Bloch's dissatisfaction with the response to his years with the Cleveland community, his opinions about his music, and his thoughts on being appointed director of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Also includes correspondence with Moshe Menuhin (father of violinist Yehudi Menuhin), the superintendent of San Francisco's Jewish Education Society and Goldman's former classmate at New York University. Menuhin's letters express his pride about his son's musical career and bitterness about the "whole tragedy of Jewish education," and his comments about Rabbi Wolf Gold of San Francisco illuminate the controversy between the "100 percent Orthodox" and the Reform and Conservative branches of Judaism.
