The collection contains materials related to the women's movement and the women's studies movement at the University of California, Berkeley. It includes correspondence, Birken's curriculum vitae, papers written by Birken and drafts of parts of her BA thesis on women's studies at Berkeley, newspaper clippings, a proposal for a Department of Women's Studies at University of California, Berkeley, and "Report on Women's Studies," by Carolyn Porter.

Sarah A. Birken (nee Berkowitz) received her BA from the University of California, Berkeley in Women's Studies in 2002. She earned her MSPH and her Ph.D. in Healthy Policy and Management from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2006 and 2011, respectively. At the time she donated her papers, Birken was a professor at the Gillings School of Global Public Health and director of several programs at UNC, Chapel Hill.
