Save Mount Diablo (Organization)

Abstract:

Consists of minutes, agendas, administrative files, correspondence and subject files kept by Susan Watson while she served on Save Mount Diablo's Board of Directors. The bulk of the collection are the subject files. Projects in the subject files include restoration of native bunchgrass and peregrine falcons to the mountain. Subject files also include campaigns against development in sensitive areas and to mitigate the environmental effects of development, demonstrating Save Mount Diablo's work with local government and development companies. Also includes information on topics of interest to the organization, such as conservation easements. Administrative files and board meeting minutes reflect the growth of Save Mount Diablo from a small, volunteer-run organization through the hiring of its first staff member, Seth Adams, and membership growth from approximately 1,000 members in 1988 to about 6,000 in 2001.

Susan Watson served as a member of the Save Mount Diablo Board from 1983-1996, and as Board President from 1989-1996. Save Mount Diablo was founded in 1971 as a non-profit organization whose mission is to preserve Mount Diablo's peaks and surrounding foothills, through land acquisition and preservation strategies to: protect the mountain's natural beauty, integrity, and biological diversity; enhance the area's quality of life; and provide recreational opportunities consistent with protection of natural resources. During Watson's tenure on the board, Save Mount Diablo expanded its membership, hired its first staff, added many acres to Mount Diablo State Park, restored habitat and weighed in on policy issues including grazing and the removal of communication towers. Watson has also served on other local environmental organizations: as Vice Chairperson of Lassen Volcanic National Park Foundation, President of the Contra Costa Parks Council, Director of People for Open Space, and as a member of the East Bay Regional Park Advisory Committee.
