Collection Overview

Title:

Sweet-Anooshian family photograph collection

Abstract:

Chiefly family snapshots and some studio portraits of an Armenian American family in the Fresno area. Snapshots depicting outings, leisure gatherings and celebrations from about 1910 to 1930 predominate, and locations are chiefly around Northern California, including Fresno, Yosemite, the Sierra Nevada, and San Francisco. Some agricultural views are present. Some studio portraits date to the 1890s or 1900, and one or two are presumed to picture the mother and other family members of James A. Sweet. Several dozen color slides are present from one or more trips to Hawaii, apparently dating to the 1950s, with some mounts dated 1962. The slides and 3 home movie reels (circa 1941-1942) appear to be from Ralph A. Hamlin (Ralph Aram Hamalian) of San Francisco, who was married to Vertwee (Rosa) Sweet (Anooshian), daughter of James A. Sweet. Box 1: snapshot album and portraits of family members -- Box 2: chiefly snapshots of leisure activities with family and friends, circa 1915-1940. Most appear to have been removed from albums (prior to receipt by library), and all are unidentified. Some are duplicates of images in the album found in Box 1. Hawaiian slides, circa 1950s. Also present: some postcards and pieces of printed ephemera -- Oversize (AX) folders: portraits and printed ephemera.
three home movie reels (approximately 300 feet, total), chiefly unidentified, but one labeled as Christmas dinner and Ice Follies, 1941; one dated 1942; the third undated and unidentified. All identified by a note indicating they were "for Anne" from "Ralph", with the name R.A. Hamlin of San Francisco noted. Also present in the carton is one rolled panoramic portrait photograph of a group of Heald Business College students in Fresno, circa 1910-1915.
