[Snapshot photograph albums of student life at the University of California, Berkeley, and engineering projects in the Philippines]

Abstract:

2 snapshot photograph albums compiled by an unidentified engineer who attended the University of California, Berkeley (probably Class of 1911) and later worked in the Philippines. Volume 1, "School Daze", documents student life at U.C. Berkeley from approximately 1908 to 1911, depicting student activities, athletic competitions and other events, buildings and grounds of the campus, and outings of engineering students in the California wilderness. Among the noteworthy events documented are former U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt's visit to campus and his speech at the Greek Theatre in 1911; "Freshie-Soph" pushball games of 1908, 1910 and 1911 and a tug-of-war event in 1911; a Freshmen "Big Game" football match-up between Cal and Stanford University at Stanford Field in 1908; rowing, baseball and track and field competitions; theatrical performances; humorous costumed jousting, racing and other activities before large crowds; graduation processions; a "Skull & Keys" honor society activity; student military (perhaps R.O.T.C.?) drills; and a group of uniformed band members performing in black-face. Also included are individual and group portraits of students. A few photographs document a large crowd gathered in downtown Berkeley. The latter pages of the album chiefly document outings of engineering students at Camp California in Santa Cruz County near Swanton and along Big Creek and Liddell Creek, depicting surveying and leisure activities. A few images depict a wrecked San Vicente Logging Company locomotive. Volume 2, "Engineering Views", documents various construction projects and structures in the Philippines associated with the engineer's work, including the building of Iloilo Custom House, as well as the Cotabato Public Hospital, Cotabato-Tamontaka Road, and various bridges, school buildings and trails. Engineers and construction workers are depicted throughout the album. Irrigation and dredging are also depicted. Among the identified locations depicted are Iloilo, Cotabato, Pikit and Zamboanga. Adhered to the first page of the album is a group portrait of the Philippine Society of San Francisco taken at a banquet at the Union League Club in 1916. It is likely that the compiler of the albums is depicted in both volumes.
