Title:

[Sierra Club collection of Cedric Wright photographs.]
Sierra Club collection

Creator/Contributor:

Wright, Cedric, 1889-1959, creator, photographer.

Abstract:

Nature photography, wilderness views, Sierra Club "High Trips", and other backpacking and hiking groups, chiefly in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California. PIC boxes 1-3: xerox copies of prints retained by the Sierra Club, numbered to correspond with matching negatives in the Bancroft collection. Corresponding photographer's notes (PIC box 8) provide technical details on equipment, exposure times, and notes on printing for some views. -- PIC boxes 4-7: prints 8x10 inches or smaller from Sierra Club "High Trips", for the years 1945, 1951, 1952, 1955, and several from 1953. Most are unidentified, but bear numbers. No listings identify these numbers, and the numbers do not correspond to numbers assigned to negatives. Some typescripts are present in which Wright lists his prices and provides some commentary for Sierra Club members wishing to purchase prints. -- B boxes 1-7: large format prints, mostly mounted, of Sierra Club trips, Sierra Nevada scenery, and nature studies. Prints are in sets that date from 1934, 1945, 1947, 1949, and 1950. A few prints are in a set with various dates from 1940, 1945, 1948, 1951, and 1953. Others are undated. These prints had been distributed among various boxes but were reunited as sets by library staff based upon physical evidence of mounts, size, and style of markings. Most are unidentified.
11 photographs by Howard Laws of the Sierra Club trip in Sequoia National Park, 1963, on 11 x 14 inch mounts. These views, taken after Cedric Wright's death, were erroneously accessioned as part of the Wright collection, but may have been received from the Sierra Club at the same time. (Shelved as BANC PIC 1971.036--AX.)

Title devised by cataloger.
Contact prints of the negatives in this collection were retained by the San Francisco Chapter of the Sierra Club. Xerox copies were provided to Bancroft Library (PIC boxes 1-3) and serve as a guide to the corresponding negative files.
Some prints were previously shelved as part of BANC PIC 1977.066, Photographs from the Cedric Wright papers, and were united here with related images with identical mounts, notations, or signature styles. It is unknown whether these separations of like materials occurred at the Sierra Club, while in the custody of Wright or Ansel Adams, or upon transfer to Bancroft Library. More material related by subject matter remains in the Photographs from the Cedric Wright papers.

Born George Cedric Wright on 13 April 1889 in Alameda, Calif., Wright was a violinist, photographer, active Sierra Club member, and close friend and associate of Ansel Adams. During the Second World War he was a technical photographer at Berkeley's Radiation Laboratory, but he is known for his nature photography and Sierra Nevada landscapes. The Sierra Club published Cedric Wright: words of the earth, posthumously, in 1960.
