Abstract:

Comments on growing up in Sacramento; education at University of California, Class of 1912; career as a San Francisco lawyer, with discussion of labor cases, waterfront strikes, and representing Joseph DiGiorgio, Matson Navigation Company, Hawaiian Sugar Planters Association and the Hearst family; service on the Stanford University Board of Trustees; work as associate director, Legal Division, U.S. Military Government of Germany after World War II, and as legal adviser, U.S. Dept. of State, 1953-57; the Nuremberg trials; attendance at international conferences (Geneva, Suez, Antarctica, etc.); appointment to various government committees; and continuing interest in international affairs. Information also about his wife's family, the Macondrays and the Athertons.
Appended: photocopies of two speeches, including remarks at Newton B. Drury's funeral.
