Samuel James Corbett was born in Rome, New York in 1837. His family moved to Massachusetts sometime after his third birthday. At the age of 20, he left for California, sailing around the Horn and arriving in San Francisco in 1858. On December 10, 1862, he enlisted in the United States Army, joining the California Hundred (Company A, 2nd Massachusetts Cavalry Regiment). He was wounded during the Civil War and mustered out on July 20, 1865 at Fairfax Courthouse, Virginia. In 1867, he married Dr. Elizabeth Jane Wiley, a San Francisco physician. In 1868, he graduated from Toland Medical College, became a physician himself and practiced medicine in San Francisco. He was a member of Grand Army of the Republic, Lincoln Post No. 1. Dr. Corbett died at the age of 55 in 1891 in San Francisco.
