James Swinnerton, Sr., came to California in 1849 from the the midwest. He was engaged in mining until 1852 when he went East, returning in 1853, again across the plains with his wife and four children, eventually settling in San Jose. Two sons, James and Silas, became attorneys, briefly practicing together in Eureka. Silas then moved, first to Salinas and later to San Luis Obispo, while James moved to Stockton, California, where he was elected Judge in 1884. William eventually settled in Daggett, California, and worked as a printer.
