Sigmund Anker was born in Lemberg, Poland in 1891. He studied at the Royal Conservatory in Poland before travelling to New York City in 1909 to continue his musical studies. He moved to San Francisco in 1913, where he became a member of the San Francisco Philharmonic. Anker eventually ceased playing professionally and devoted himself to teaching the violin full time.
