Abstract:

Collection of 13 letters (39 pages) mailed to and from members of the Stone family in Berkeley, California, between May 18, 1918 and January 30, 1919. The majority of the letters are from Amelia "Minnie" Stone in Berkeley to her son Malcolm "Max" Stone, a private in the U.S. Expeditionary Forces stationed in France during World War I. Includes additional letters to Max from his father, Marion Pierce Stone, a clerk in the City Tax Office, and Arthur L. Price (born 1879), a reporter and editor of a poetry column in the San Francisco Examiner. Also includes a letter from Minnie to friends and two letters (one undated) from "Billie" (possibly a girlfriend of Minnie). Topics referenced in the letters include social, local, and some national undercurrents and events such as the influenza epidemic (the daughters of the family worked in the Red Cross), city-wide enforcement of the wearing of gauze masks, deaths of various friends, home remedies, etc., the war effort at home and abroad (rationing and buying of war bonds), labor concerns (the rise in wages during the war and the fears of labor disputes over jobs as soldiers return, the role of women in the wartime workforce, and the presence of African American nurses in the Red Cross). The letter from Price is typed on San Francisco Examiner letterhead and mentions the controversy over Hearst's coverage of the war and the camouflaging of ships; it also includes a humorous poem about the Kaiser and the Germans.
