Drakesbad was founded in 1900 by Roy's father, Alexander Sifford, a Susanville schoolteacher, who purchased 400 acres from Edward Drake, who homesteaded there in the 1870s. The hot springs campground was operated by the Sifford family until 1959. From 1956-58, they made it possible for the lands to be purchased by Lassen National Park, and in 1960, title passed into the hands of the National Park Service.
