Title:

[Samuel Lawrence Nutting and Ellen Chickering Nutting family portraits and other photographs]

Creator/Contributor:

Vance, Robert H., 1825-1876, photographer.

Creator/Contributor:

Tyler & Co. (1854- ), photographer.

Abstract:

Includes individual and group portraits of Nutting and Chickering family members, including Samuel Lawrence Nutting, his wife Ellen Chickering Nutting, and other relatives and associates. Family members depicted in the ambrotype group portrait by Vance (item 1) are unidentified but, based on the age of the baby present, may include Mary Ellen Nutting Jenner (sister of Samuel and wife of Elijah Kirkham Jenner), her baby daughter Ann, some of her Nutting brothers, and her step daughter Ellen Jenner (born 1843), smiling, in pink-tinted dress. The man standing at back (smiling) is also depicted in a daguerreotype (items 2-3) taken in Boston, so he is almost certainly a Nutting brother. Presence of cartes de visite from Kentucky studios suggests some photographs may be from the family of Samuel L. Nutting's brother, Daniel W. Nutting and his wife Mary Jane Forsythe, also of Yolo County. The Forsythe family had Kentucky connections. Most portraits in the collection are unidentified.
