"Between 1928 and 1930 Adams created photographs for two collaborative projects with Mary Austin. One was the book Taos Pueblo published in 1930 and the other was the never completed project on Spanish Colonial Arts in the United States. Both projects came at a very important time in Adams' photographic career as he was making the transition from the fine art photography known as pictorialism to a more modern vision in photography." (From appraisal of album by book dealer Michael Dawson.) "At the time [this project] was a pioneering endeavour and would have been the first full-length illustrated study of Hispanic New Mexican folk art." (From Ansel Adams and Spanish colonial arts, Theresa Salazar, History of Photography, v.22 no.2, 1998.).
