Creator/Contributor:

Online Archive of California

Abstract:

Album (green hardbound labeled "Holiday Pictures") contains 84 black and white photographs in "windows" through which photos may be removed. Some photos have handwritten captions on back. Scenes of indigenous people and westerners (the latter mostly unidentified, although there is one of "late Governor Reginald Wingate and another of "Ex-President Roosevelt's carriage." Sources indicate that former President Theodore Roosevelt gave a lecture at the American Mission in Khartoum in 1910 (instructing "the native officers on their duty to uphold British law") during his African travels and safari. During this time period Sudan, under joint Egyptian-British rule, was a de facto British colony. Someone using an instrument described as a theodolite suggests surveying activity. One of the photo captions also notes a "Survey Office." Places and locales identified include: Hassaheissa, Rufaa, Khartoum, Wad Medani, and Omdurman among others.
