Includes portrait and snapshot photographs of Maria von Ridelstein and her husband Herbert von Ridelstein, photographic reproductions
of their artwork, and photographs depicting art exhibitions and Maria's Art & Style Studio in San Francisco. Also includes
original drawings by the von Ridelsteins, printed material illustrated with their artwork, and various pieces of ephemera
pertainging to exhibitions. Also includes two scrapbooks chiefly pertaining to the art and careers of the von Ridelsteins,
and an artist's notebook of recipes for papier mâché and other craft techniques.

Maria von Ridelstein was born in Leipzig, Germany in 1884. Baron Herbert von Ridelstein was born in Temesvar, Hungary in 1873.
Herbert abandoned a career in the military to study at the Munich Academy of Art. Maria studied art in Paris, Rome and at
the Munich Academy of Art, where she met Herbert. After marrying, the couple studied art in Paris at the Academie de la Grande
Chaumiere. In 1913 they moved to Asia. At the outset of World War I, Herbert volunteered in the Austrian navy. He was captured
by the Japanese and imprisoned for several years in a concentration camp. During Herbert's imprisonment, Maria taught art
in Yokohama. The couple later lived in Valparaiso, Chile and in 1926 settled in San Francisco, where they both worked at the
Fashion Art School in the Scottish Rite Temple. Maria also taught at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland.
Herbert died in 1935. Maria died in 1970.
Herbert von Ridelstein was born in Temesvar, Hungary in 1873.
