Abstract:

Correspondence; medical school and marriage certificates; license to practice medicine; certificate of appointment to State Board of Medical Examiners; certificate of appointment to rank of First Lieutenant in the Medical Reserve Corps (1911); Medical Reserve Corps dog tag; professional pins; a monogramed silver container belonging to Philip Mills Jones, assistant to the chair of otology at the University of California and Barbat's close friend; photograph of Barbat with friends at Bohemian Grove; portrait of Barbat; and Barbat's copy of the Illustrated History of The University of California (1895). Also included are letters to Barbat's wife, Mary Jane, at the time of Barbat's death in 1920.

Dr. John Henry Barbat (September 10, 1862-April 22, 1920) was a prominent physician in San Francisco and served as a demonstrator in anatomy at the University of California. His father was a pharmacist in San Francisco. Barbat graduated from the University of California School of Pharmacy in 1880 and the University of California Medical Department in 1888. He married Mary Jane O'Brien in 1888 and together they had three daughters: Alice, Claire, and Aileen. In 1909, Barbat was appointment to the State Board of Medical Examiners. In 1911, he was appointed to the US Medical Reserve Corps of the US Army. In 1912, he served on the delegation to the Pacific Northwest in support of the Panama-Pacific Exhibition held in San Francisco in 1915. Barbat was a Rotarian, an Elk, a member of the Commonwealth Club, and a member of the Bohemian Club.
