Abstract:

Photographs documenting the progress of a fire that destroyed much of Honolulu's Chinatown, January 20, 1900. Most views depict, from a distant vantage point, Kaumakapili Church before it was burned, while it was on fire, and its later ruins. One image includes a person identified in caption, "Dr. Nathaniel Emerson on horseback?"

The fire that destroyed much of Honolulu's Chinatown in January of 1900 was started with the intent of burning a few buildings thought to be infected by the bubonic plague that arrived in late 1899. Strong winds caused the fire to eventually spread uncontrolled.
