Five typescript letters, signed by Kenji "Ken" Sayama, a young Japanese American man from California who had been forcibly
relocated to Arkansas during World War II, to two of his friends from the University of California, Berkeley. Four of the
letters are addressed to William "Bill" Rockwell. One letter is addressed to "Shoupie" who is also mentioned in the letters
to Rockwell. Sayama reminisces about their time living together in Atherton Hall at Berkeley and describes his life in the
relocation camps including his eventual acceptance into the U.S. military as an intelligence officer. Includes three of the
original mailing envelopes addressed to Bill Rockwell.

Kenji "Ken" Sayama (March 2, 1921-February 10, 2016) was a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley (Class of 1942)
earning his Masters degree in Zoology in 1950 and his Ph. D. in 1953. During World War II he served in the United States Army
as a military intelligence officer in Japan. In 2011, he was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal given in honor of the "Nisei
Soldiers of World War II."
William Calvin Rockwell (October 2, 1919-October 26, 2000) is best known as the creator of Oski the Bear, the official mascot
of the University of California, Berkeley.
