Abstract:
The papers primarily consist of Lowdermilk's writings, including essays containing her recollections on various topics related
to her experiences and impressions of China after living and working there. Topics covered include: her work establishing
schools for girls in China, difficulties for Americans learning Chinese, meeting her husband, the role of women in China,
the Nanking Incident of 1927, silk worms, farming, travels, etc. Also includes typescript essays concerning her travels to
Europe and the Middle East, including Palestine and Egypt, just prior to World War II. Contains numerous observations of war
preparations and the political situation in Europe and in Palestine just prior to the establishment of the state of Israel.
Also includes one typescript account of the Nanking Incident of 1927, by her husband Walter Clay Lowdermilk, describing his
narrow escape from death at the hands of the retreating Chinese Nationalist soldiers. Also includes one issue of "The Dearborn
Independent" (April 10, 1926 ; Vol.26, Number 25) containing an article by Inez Lowdermilk titled, "What it costs the Chinese
to worship their ancestors." Also included in the papers are correspondence, notebooks and personalia. The collection also
contains a single folder containing materials about Lowdermilk compiled by her daughter, Wester Hess.

Inez Marks Lowdermilk (1890-1989) was an author, educator, and humanitarian. In 1916, she traveled to China as a Methodist
educational missionary. In 1922, she met and married Walter Clay Lowdermilk, an acclaimed authority on soil conservation and
reclamation.
