Abstract:
Wide-ranging, high quality amateur views of the American west, taken by Harvey E. High during his travels throughout the first
half of the 20th century. General subject matter includes Native Americans and their material culture; desert views and other
natural scenery; highways, streets, bridges, railroads and other aspects of infrastructure; festive events; statues; civic,
regional and national parks; automobiles; animals; agriculture, lumbering and other industrial activities; and individual
and group portraits. Nearly half of views are from Colorado. Other states represented widely include California, New Mexico,
Oregon, Washington and Kansas. Colorado locations include Denver, Manitou, Ouray, Fort Collins, Grand Lake, Colorado Springs,
Salida, Garden of the Gods, Idaho Springs, Mesa Verde, Estes Park, Arvada, Boulder Creek, Cheyenne Canyon, Indian Hills, Corona,
Central City, Pike's Peak, El Dorado Springs, Rocky Mountain National Park, Canyon City, Stonewall, Moffat Tunnel, Devil's
Head, Williams Canyon, Gilman, and Mt. Evans. California views were taken in Los Angeles, San Diego's Balboa Park, San Francisco's
Golden Gate Park, Beatty's Lion Farm in El Monte, Yosemite National Park, Hollywood, Mojave Desert, Salinas, Requa, Fresno,
San Pedro, Santa Barbara, Glendale, San Gabriel Mission and Catalina Island. New Mexico views include Taos Pueblo, Laguna
Mission, Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Cimmaron Canyon and Glorietta Pass. Oregon views include Newport, McKenzie River, Toledo,
Columbia River Highway and Portland. Washington views include Seattle, Snowqualmie Pass, Tacoma, Longview and Aberdeen. Kansas
views include Carniero, Topeka, Ellsworth, Black Wolf, Wilson, Lincoln, Sylvan Grove, Brookville and Quinter. Other states
represented include Nevada (Rhyolite), Montana (hydraulic mining), Wyoming (Yellowstone National Park, DuBois), Utah (Salt
Lake City, Bryce Canyon), Arizona (Superior), Texas (Houston), Washington D.C. and the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis, Missouri.
The photographer appears in a few photographs. Other identified persons include Chief Standing Elk and fiddler Ike Shores.
Local residents, workers and tourists are depicted throughout.
