Heinz Ludwig Fraenkel-Conrat (born July 29, 1910 in Breslau, Germany ; died April 10, 1999 in Oakland, California) was a biochemist,
famous for his viral research. He joined the faculty of the University of California, Berkeley in 1952 where he remained until
his death. His most noted research was on the tobacco mosaic virus and the holmes ribgrass virus. He has been cited as the
first man to take a virus apart, separate its components and put it back together again to reconstitute a live virus.
