Title:
Heber Gowen letters: to his family : ALS, 1851 July 27-1862 May 12
Creator/Contributor:
Gowen, Heber, approximately 1795-, creator
Abstract:
Twenty-two letters from Heber Gowen to his family in Kennebunk, Me., written from various California locations, mostly Petaluma.
The letters describe the climate, Gowen's business ventures, sending money home, and life in Calif. Gowen arranges for his
son to join him in Calif., but his wife, Eliza, apparently never does, and there is no indication whether Gowen returns to
Maine, although he writes often of doing so.
Additional letter of Feb. 28, 1853, addressed to Captain W. Lord, requests that he notify Gowen's wife of the death of their
son, Charles, who became ill while at sea and dies a few hours after reaching San Francisco, despite the care of Capt. John
Carter.
