Creator/Contributor:

Guadalajara, Cristóbal.

Abstract:

A group of three treatises prepared for the instruction of officials and surveyors in New Spain; with diagrams and charts. Sáenz is described on the title pages and in his own statement as merely the compiler of the work, but is generally regarded as its author in view of the preponderance of original writing. Preceded by a statement of approval from Cristóbal Guadalajara (Puebla, September 30, 1706), stating that the Ms. had been sent from Mexico City; a dedication to Captain Francisco Pérez Navas; and a note to the reader.
Vol. I. [Tratado Primero-De Medidas de Tierras], 139 p. Treatise on land legislation and measurements, with table of contents at end. For the relevant ordinances, see comment on Vol. III, infra.
Vol. II. Tratado Segundo-De las Minas ..., 117 p. Treatise on mining legislation and measurements, with table of contents at end.
Vol. III. Tratado Terzero-De Medidas de Aguas para conducirlas y pesarlas ..., 116 p. Treatise on measurement and distribution of water; including an "Addition" of July 14, 1727, composed of Mexico City municipal documents on irrigation requirements. With table of contents on p. 106, followed by material properly relating to Vol. I: a table of linear measurements, with an explanatory note, and texts of 1536-1580 ordinances on land measurement and distribution.
