Abstract:
Contains a small, but rich group of letters, some with detailed sketches, sent to Dorothea Lange by Japanese Americans and
other eye-witnesses during relocation. Includes day to day accounts of camp life in Manzanar (Calif.), Topaz (Utah), Heart
Mountain (Wyo.), and Tule Lake (Calif.). Each correspondent recounts a different experience: working in the camp, commuting
to nearby towns, and describing what is necessary to relocate independently to the eastern U.S. and other types of situations.
Correspondents include Lincoln Kanai, Dave M. Tatsuno, H.M. Kumano, Chiura Obata, Mr. & Mrs. K. Uchida, Togo W. Tanaka, Mike
Masaoka, Harry Kouda, Pvt. Alex Yorichi (U.S. Army), Frank Takahashi, Ayako Ethyle Tanaka, Yukie Fukimitsu, Masago Shibuya,
and W.W. Waymack, an Iowa farmer wanting to provide a home and job for a Japanese American.
Includes Lange's expense vouchers and itineraries. Also includes articles, flyers, statements, including some by Paul S. Taylor,
and clippings, along with information on cooperatives prepared by Hi Korematsu. A majority of the printed materials are statements
released by interest groups, including the Japanese American Citizens League, National Student Relocation Committee, Western
Defense Command, United Citizens Federation, and YMCA.
