Abstract:
Copy of unpublished typescript by liaison officer and journalist Bailey, entitled False Dawn: Liaison Officer to the Red Army.
This manuscript appears to be an English version of Bailey's book Verbindungsmann, published posthumously in German. Collection
also includes a biographical sketch from Bayard Stockton, and two books by Bailey - Germans and Verbindungsmann - which have
been cataloged separately.

George Bailey was born in 1919 in Chicago. He graduated from Columbia University and Magdalen College, Oxford. After attending
the U.S. Army officers' liaison school in Paris in the winter of 1944-1945, he spent two months with the Supreme Headquarters
of the Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF) at the time of the German surrender, during which he served as an interpreter in
Russian and German. He then moved on to Czechoslovakia as the liaison officer with the occupying Red Army. He was recruited
as a civilian contract employee of the CIA in 1951 and worked for them for three years in Berlin. He was a correspondent for
ABC Radio News and The Reporter (of which he was Executive Editor) for twelve years. He served as coordinating editor of Kontinent
magazine and was the director of Radio Liberty from 1982 to 1985. He was author of several books including Germans: Biography
of an Obsession (1972), The Making of Andrei Sakharov (1988), Galileo's Children: Science, Sakharov, and the Power of the
State (1990), Battleground Berlin: CIA vs KGB in the Cold War (1997), and Verbindungsmann: ein Leben zwischen Ost und West
(2002). Bailey died in 2001.
