Three letters (ALS) from Ann (Sturgis) Hooper [wife of Masachusetts Congressman Samuel Hooper] and daughters Annie and Alice,
Aprill 1861. Written to Samuel Hooper at the outbreak of the Civil War and describing the uncertain climate in the Washington
area at the time, as learned from their prominent social contacts with Charles Sumner, Secretary Hay, Gen. Scott, Col. Washington,
Sen. Preston King, William Pennington of Maryland and others. Topics include mob rule in Maryland, union or secession loyalties
