Thaddeus Stevens was a Republican leader and a member of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania from 1849 to 1853
and 1859 to 1868. He wrote much of the financial legislation that paid for the American Civil War as chairman of the House
Ways and Means Committee, and he also led the Radical Republicans during the war and Reconstruction era.
