Abstract:
Includes photographs, postcards and other material pertaining to the southwestern US, Central America and South America.
Many photographs were taken by Bolton and/or his colleagues during his travels and field research in such areas as California,
Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, Mexico, Guatemala, Panama, Colombia, and Peru. Among the subjects depicted are city views,
pueblos, Indians, landscapes, Spanish mission buildings and the Kino Trail. Also includes commercial postcards of these regions
and subjects, as well as such areas as Yellowstone National Park, Louisiana, Florida, Mexico, Cuba, El Salvador, Nicaragua,
Costa Rica, Trinidad, Venezuela, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, and Japan. Also includes photographs of maps,
book illustrations, manuscripts and other research documents; layout materials used in the production of publications; and
other manuscripts and ephemera. Bolton is depicted in many photographs.

Herbert Eugene Bolton was born on July 20, 1870 in Wilton, Wisconsin. He became Director of the Bancroft Library in 1916,
and head of the History Department at Berkeley in 1919. His career in the classroom and in the field lasted until his death
in January 1953.
