Title:
[Taylor, Easton, Howard, and Shafter, family photographs]
Abstract:
Chiefly portraits, and some casual amateur photographs, of the family and forbearers of Louise DeFremery Howard (1901-1955)
and their associates. Louise Howard's grandparents were all California settlers of the 1840s and 1850s. Pictured on her paternal
side are her grandfather, Charles Webb Howard of Oakland (president of the Spring Valley Water Company and owner of the large
Shafter-Howard ranch at Point Reyes, Marin County) her paternal grandmother Emma Lovell (Shafter) Howard, and her great-grandfather
Oscar Lovell Shafter (an attorney and California Supreme Court justice). Pictured on her maternal side are grandfather Edward
Taylor (early landowner in San Mateo County) and grandmother Frances (Fannie) Bishop (Easton) Taylor (a sister of Ansel Easton
of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company). Photographs of this generation and their children in the 1850s and 1860s are present,
as well as approximately 130 cartes de visite portraits of relations and associates, chiefly unidentified. Among these are
Darius Ogden Mills and wife, and his brother Edgar Mills. Howard family parties and outings in and around Oakland from 1889-1901
are pictured, and view photographs of Colorado about 1890-1892 are present.
