Theodore Henry Hittell was a journalist, lawyer and California State Senator, best known for his four-volume History of California
(1885-1897). John Schertzer Hittell was, like his brother Theodore, a noted journalist and historian. Karl Ritter von Scherzer
was an Austrian scientist and explorer.
