Paul Bannai, a Japanese-American, was born in 1920. With his family, he was interned at Manzanar during World War II. Permitted
to go to Des Moines to attend college, he then volunteered for the Japanese-American regimental combat team, the 442nd, and
served as an interpreter with the Australians in the Pacific Theater. He established a real estate business in Gardena, and
in 1972, was elected to the Sixty-Seventh Assembly District seat, serving until his defeat in 1980. He then served as Executive
Director of the Commission of Wartime Relocation of Civilians briefly, and in 1981, was appointed chief director of the Memorial
Affairs Department of the Veterans Administration in Washington, D.C. and served until 1986.
