Photocopy of Tutwiler's paper on the early history of a tract of land and sawmill located in Bonny Doon, an unincorporated
area ten miles northwest of Santa Cruz. The history begins with a description of the tract, called Rancho Arroyo de la Laguna,
as a Mexican land grant in 1841, then centers around its use by the Williams brothers, in particular, James, who was among
the first American claimants to the area when purchasing the land in 1847. Further description is given of Williams' life
on the ranch as well as a chronicle of land uses and transactions both before and after the death of Williams. Following the
history is an appendix of maps of the area.
James, John, Isaac, and Squire Williams arrived in John Sutter's projected New Helvetia settlement on Nov. 10, 1843, from
Cape Girardeau County, Missouri. By 1847, they had all moved to the Santa Cruz area. James Williams died Oct. 9, 1858, and
Squire in 1848.
