Abstract:
Diary begins July 4, 1846, 100 miles west of Fort Laramie. Journey continues via Fort Laramie, Sweetwater River, South Pass,
Fort Bridger, Salt Lake, Hastings Cut-off, Humboldt River, Truckee River to Mission San Jose. (Nov. 7, 1846) The diary records
the physical landscape the party passed through, encounters with buffalo and bears, availability of grass, timber and other
plants, the separation of the party into groups taking different routes, searching for mountain passes and fresh water, and
the number of miles travelled each day. Copies available in portfolio: record prints; and typed transcripts made in 1951 by
Frances E. Campbell and Violet Green. Journal marked: continued from another book.
Frances E. Campbell kept correspondence files regarding the James Mathers diary, including letters exchanged with George P.
Hammond, director of the Bancroft Library, and Dale Morgan. Topics include Bancroft's possession of the diary, publication
of the diary, and permissions to view the diary. Campbell also collected subject files regarding the diary; topics consist
of Morgan's "Overland in 1846", James Mathers and his ranch, Carolan Mathers, Otis Ashley, overland routes, and Cambria, Calif.
Chiefly consists of photocopies.
