Abstract:
The manuscript portion of the collection contains two hand-printed leaves, on Japanese rice paper, from A Common Botany (1956).
Dr. and Mrs. MacKinley Helm also donated a large number of important printed works, many of which came to Special Collections
and which have been cataloged individually. Included are T. S. Eliot, Robert Frost, and Henry James first editions, other
earlier works, including incunabula, fine and small press titles, Santa Barbara authors, and Mexican imprints. Much of the
donation came from the Hammond Library, once housed at the Santa Barbara Bonnymede estate, and belonging to Mrs. Esther Fiske
Hammond, mother of Mrs. MacKinley Helm. Other parts of the donation, such as the Eliot and Frost volumes, were collected expressly
for UCSB by Dr. Helm.
A Dec. 22, 1953 article in the Santa Barbara News Press notes the significance of the 'Bonnymede' gift and quotes the University
Librarian, Donald C. Davidson, as saying that volumes such as the Henry James first editions would help form the nucleus of
a Department of Special Collections, which did not yet exist [but would be created by the late 1950s].
