The Hindustan Gadar party, active in the early decades of the 20th century, was based in the San Francisco Bay Area and the
San Joaquin Valley. Gadar means "revolution" and the movement hoped to achieve the overthrow of British rule and the establishment
of Indian independence. Most accounts of the Gadar Party cover the span of years from 1913-1917, beginning with the arrival
of Lala Har Dayal, a visiting professor at Stanford University who was the central figure of the movement, and ending with
the San Francisco conspiracy trial in 1917.
