Abstract:
This oral history consists of retrospective interviews concerning the environmentalist Martha Alexander Gerbode. Topics include
her support of groups ranging from the World Affairs Council, the Institute of Pacific Relations, and Planned Parenthood,
to the Nature Conservancy, and the Art and Ecology Institute; her family; World War II experiences, and Japanese relocation.
Supplementary material includes a letter written to her in-laws, [1939 or 1940?], a photocopy of her diary from a European
trip, 1936-37, and miscellaneous biographical material, along with clippings and other material relating to the Gerbode Preserve/
Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and to the Oahu Development Conference and Diamond Head development issues. Also includes
(in oversize folder) a manuscript musical score and words for the class song of Mt. Vernon Seminary, created and written by
Martha Alexander Gerbode in 1928.
