Title:
[Copper River and Northwestern Railway construction photograph album]
Abstract:
Photograph album of small format, professional views of construction of the Copper River and Northwestern Railway and associated
subjects, taken at various stages and locations during the challenging project that connected the Kennecott Copper Mines with
the port town of Cordova, Alaska. Images document the construction of rail lines and various bridges and trestles, tunnels,
slips and steamships (Tonsina, Gulkana and Chitina) associated with the effort. Construction workers and work camps are also
depicted. Many images document surrounding landscapes and waterscapes, and the prominent obstacles of construction, including
harsh winter weather and advancing glaciers. Among the identified locations and points of interest are the Copper River, Cordova,
Miles Glacier, Childs Glacier, Abercrombie and Crater Peak. A few views of the Kennecott Copper Mine are likely included.
Accomplished railroad contractor Michael Heney, who financed the project, is likely depicted among a few views of officials
and dignitaries. Album includes two fold-out panoramic views, each comprising multiple prints.
