Martha Loeffler (1920-2012) was born and raised in Berkeley, California. Her parents were Polish immigrants and ran a Berkeley
market called the Euclid Market. She received her B.A. in history and and advanced degree in Social Work from the University
of California, Berkeley. In the 1980s, Loeffler began to write and publish in newspapers and magazines, including The Modesto
Bee, in which she published a regular column entitled "My Turn." She wrote numerous books including Boats in the Night, a
biography of Knud Dyby. She was an active member of Congregation Beth Shalom in Modesto.
