John Christopher Stevens was born in California in 1960. He attended the University of California, Berkeley where he received
his degree in History in 1982, then served in the Peace Corps. in Morocco from 1983 to 1985. Stevens attained his J.D. from
the University of California Hastings in 1989. Upon joining the United States Foreign Service in 1991 he was assigned to various
posts in Israel, Egypt, Syria, and Saudi Arabia as well as two terms in Libya. After Libya's Arab Spring uprising in 2011
Stevens assisted with the establishment of an American diplomatic outpost. He returned to Benghazi as the United States Ambassador
to Libya in May, 2012. On September 11, 2012 he died in Benghazi during an embassy attack and subsequent fire.
