Born Baltimore Maryland, ca. 1890; died Perris, California, 1979. Black performer, stage producer, songwriter, screenwriter,
and founding member of the Screen Actors Guild. He was a producer-director-writer in the Black theaters of New York and Chicago
before coming to Hollywood in 1928, where he appeared in more than 200 motion pictures.
