The Wagner family enterprises of tanning and leather goods were started by a German immigrant to the California gold rush,
Jacob C. Wagner (1830-1896). His younger brother, Charles Wagner (1837-1912) followed him to California and they formally
began the family business in 1856. Charles married Phillipina Simon and they had two children, Edward Charles (1869-1940)
and Bertha Emily (1873-1956).
