Correspondence 1886-1888

Scope and Contents note

Major correspondents include Frederick Law Olmsted; J. C. Olmsted; J. G. McMillan; Ariel Lathrop; Francis Walker; and J. MacLaren. Corresondence in this folder is primarily concerned with the development of the campus plan, and the begining stages of construction of the university. Included are many letters from Olmsted to Leland Stanford and Mr. J. G. McMillan (supervising engineer). There are also numerous communications to Mr. McMillan from the Lathrop brothers, who served as Leland Stanford's representatives on the site.

Major correspondents include Frederick Law Olmsted and J. C. Olmsted; Henry S. Codman; Ariel Lathrop; Thos. H. Douglas; and Charles Edward Hodges. Contents of this folder deal with the visit of Henry S. Codman (an Olmsted partner) to the Palo Alto site; disputes between Olmsted and Ariel Lathrop; the dismissal of Mr. McMillan; and Olmsted's withdrawal from the Stanford University project. Included is Olmsted's letter to David Starr Jordan introducing the firm, May 6, 1891.

Major correspondents include Charles Edward Hodges, Charles Lathrop, and Joseph Lamb. Contents include corespondence between Charles Edward Hodges, Jane Stanford, and Charles Lathrop regarding construction of the Museum additions, Memorial Church, parts of the quadrangle, the gymnasium and the library. There is also corresondence between university officials and Joseph Lamb, manufacturer of stained glass windows.

Major correspondents include Joseph Lamb, Charles Lathrop, firm of Shepley, Rutan, and Coolidge, and the Olmsted Brothers firm. Contents include correspondence regarding construction of the library (destroyed in the 1906 earthquake); copy of letter (1910) from Shepley, Rutan, and Coolidge to J. C. Branner stating their role in construction of the university; copy of letter (1914) from firm of Olmsted Brothers to the Stanford Board of Trustees with their recommendations regarding campus landscaping; copies of letters (1930s) from the Olmsted Brothers to Emory Smith regarding F. L. Olmsted's role in the construction of the university; and Charles Coolidge's reminiscences (1937).
